What we sharpen (and what we don't)

What we sharpen
At Northern Rivers Blade Sharpening, we specialize in professional sharpening for tools that see real work. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Knives and kitchen blades – Chef knives, utility knives, and specialty blades get precision honing so they cut smoothly and safely.
- Scissors – From hairdressing and grooming scissors to craft and trade scissors, if it has a screw pivot and decent steel, we can sharpen it.
- Clippers and trimmers – Steel and ceramic clipper blades for pets, livestock, or trade use. Regular sharpening keeps them cutting clean and reduces motor strain.
- Garden and workshop tools – Hedge shears, pruning scissors, and small cutting tools. Sharpening restores performance and reduces fatigue.
Pro Tip: Even minor sharpening can make a huge difference in efficiency and safety. Dull tools don’t just slow you down, they wear out your hands and wrists.
What we don’t sharpen
Not all tools are suitable for professional sharpening. Here’s what we avoid and why:
- Chainsaw Chains – These require specialised equipment and expertise beyond our service scope.
- Large industrial or specialty machinery blades – Safety and precision are key, and we don’t have the setup for oversized or complex machinery blades.
- Plastic or disposable blades – Once the edge is gone, it’s gone. Attempting to sharpen these often damages the tool further.
- Heavily damaged or bent blades – Tools with severe rust, cracks, or bends may not survive sharpening. In these cases, replacement is safer and more effective.
Trust the Pros: Trying to sharpen unsuitable blades at home can ruin your tool and be dangerous. We always give honest advice about what’s serviceable.
Why Knowing the Difference Matters
Understanding which tools can and cannot be sharpened saves you time, money, and frustration. It also ensures your tools are safe to use and perform at their best. At Northern Rivers Blade Sharpening, decades of trade and farm experience guide every recommendation.
